‘Boldness be my friend! Arm me, audacity.’ — Cymbeline Act.1 Sc.6
What we are is a company; a group of friends who gather together to make each other, and our audiences, happy.
What we do is tell stories. Other people’s stories; stories that are specially written for us; stories that we improvise and expand upon, all through the medium of theatre.
‘Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore, Be sure of it.’ — Othello Act.3 Sc.3
Why Shakespeare? We love to tell stories and there is no greater storyteller. All human experience is there in his words and they come to life as we draw the audience into a world that, perhaps, they have never experienced before.
‘Death lies on her like an untimely frost.’ — Romeo and Juliet Act.4 Sc.5
Wherever we can; but our main production happens every summer, in the open-air, at Dartmouth Castle. We’ve also toured Shakespeare and modern pieces from Cornwall to Wiltshire via Devon, Somerset and Dorset. And we’ve won awards doing it – most notably the Audience Choice Award at the Swindon Fringe in 2016 for ‘Dominion’ by Max Brandt.
‘The labour we delight in physics pain.’ — Macbeth Act.2 Sc.3
How we do what we do, for the most part, is simple: hard-work, determination to produce the best possible production and a true love for it all. We have a committee of just eight people who bring it all to fruition.
‘t would be argument for a week, laughter for a month, and a good jest forever.’ — Henry IV Part 1; Act.2 Sc.2
The main event is in July at Dartmouth Castle. But we gather regularly to socialise, read the occasional play, discuss what we want to do and make plans for future productions. Then there’s the after-show party, the AGM - to which everyone is always invited - and regular workshops.
‘…we in it shall be rememberéd; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers’. — Henry V; Act.4 Sc.3
You. And us. There are so many people involved in what we do that we can’t possibly name them all here. Our Artistic Director (the woman who leads the Company and who’s idea the whole thing was back in 2002) is Jane Windsor – Smith…and then there are the actors, the musicians, the choreographers, the set-builders, the sound and light technicians, the costumiers, the front-of-house-team…. the list goes on.
